Dr. Claire Agana-Madrazo and Dr. Eden G. Aquino, faculty members from the English Department of the Western Mindanao State University’s College of Liberal Arts presented their studies on language in the 2014 International Conference on Applied Linguistics and Language Education (ICALLE).
The conference which was held at the Henry Sy Sr. Hall of the De La Salle University in Manila from October 16-18, 2014, aimed to strengthen the language educators with skills in the method and practice of language teaching and information about theoretical and methodological development and issues concerning how languages such as English are learned and taught.
Attendees and participants hailed from different institutions in the world to share their findings of applied linguistic research and their implications and applications to language education in different contexts.
These participants were from the Philippines, Japan, India, South Korea, Spain, China, Thailand, and the USA with plenary lecturers from Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau.
Dr. Madrazo’s paper was entitled “The role of L1 Chabacano in L2 English writing process of the college students of Western Mindanao State University,” a study that aimed to test if there is any significant relationship in students’ composing behaviors and writing proficiency.
Meanwhile, Dr. Aquino’s study, “Conversational styles and illocutionary acts of Chabacano speakers in Zamboanga City” is a sociolinguistic probe which presented a relevant comprehensive description of the micro and macro speech acts of select Chabacano speakers of Zamboanga.
Both papers were co-authored by another faculty member from CLA, Dr. Arnel R. Madrazo.
