Dean Labad and some students holding on to the planting materials

Every year CPERS is very active in reaching out to communities and barangays through its extension services. In 2011, it went as far as Cagayan de Oro City to represent WMSU in helping the victims of Bagyo Sendong.

This year, CPERS’s extension program rides on the spirit of the love month, February. It manifests its love for the environment thru an activity dubbed “CPERS GOES GREEN PROGRAM”.

On February 3 the faculty members, student leaders and select PE students planted mangrove seedlings at Sta. Cruz Island. Prof. Milagros F. Yosores, Dean of Student Affairs, witnessed the activity and went out of her way to help plant the propagules. A representative of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office was around to facilitate the planting and to give a brief lecture on the importance, relevance and benefits of propagating mangrove.

On February 4, the college did an inaugural and symbolic planting of green grass (carabao grass) on the open field in campus. It signaled CPERS’ humble start at greening WMSU. This is the college’s response to the President’s agenda on environmental awareness, and her call to do a makeover of WMSU by making the campus clean and green.

The “CPERS GOES GREEN PROJECT” was made possible through the unstinting support of the very active faculty members; the unselfish service of the PE majors; the dynamism and leadership of the dean of the college, Prof. ELMER M. LABAD; and the inspiration and motivation coming from no less than the University President, Dr. Milabel Ho. (CPERS Press Release)

Dr. Ederlinda M. Fernandez-WMSU Vice President for Planning, Administration and Finance and an active women’s rights advocate (center) during the forum discussion invites the community women leaders and other participants to join in the One Billion Rising event as Prof. Rosalyn Echem (right) and Representative Ilagan (left) looks on.

More than 1500 Zamboangueños participated in the One Billion Rising on a Valentine’s Day. Western Mindanao State University-Gender Research and Resource Center (WMSU-GRRC), Gabriela Alliance of Filipino Women and a certain women’s partylist headed Zamboanga City to “strike, dance and rise” against all forms of violence against women.

The global campaign of One Billion Rising: Strike, Dance and Rise! is a synchronized event worldwide on February 14. Held at the WMSU grounds, the unique initiative was joined in by WMSU students, faculty, administrative personnel, WMSU officials, community women leaders and other local city officials.

The dance revolution sought to address the incessant and proliferating cases of rape, battery, sexual harassment, psychological and physical abuse towards women. The choreography and the lyrics of the soundtrack clearly demonstrated the increasing desire to stop the culture of violence.

WMSU Gender Research and Resource Center Director-Prof.

WMSU President-Dr. Milabel Enriquez-Ho expressed her solid support in an audio-video presentation shown before the One Billion Rising event, “WMSU will strike to protect women and children from violence. WMSU will dance to express support for programs, projects and services which
will be protecting women and children’s rights, women and children’s health, women’s and children’s right to live, love and laugh and all other related aspects and areas of living.

A participant engages in a hearty discussion with Representative Ilagan as Congresswoman Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar looks on.

Lastly she said, “And WMSU will rise to build new opportunities for women and children, to maximize their potentials, to maximize their persons, to maximize their resources and to improve their quality of life. Today, tomorrow and beyond.”

The overwhelming support for the One Billion Rising was felt not only by the WMSU community but also by the whole of Zamboanga City as it reaped positive responses. The campaign, in the form of a dance, served not only as a fun activity for the participants but a meaningful and symbolical expression to end such culture of violence in the midst of everyday life.

Meanwhile, the WMSU-GRRC also spearheaded a forum on the issue of Violence against Women (VAW) last February 8, in which interested groups and women leaders engaged in an interactive discussion. Consultations with local and community leaders were also conducted. The said consultations sought to instill a firm grasp on the participants about the pressing realities of gender-based violence against women. Representative Luzviminda Ilagan was the guest speaker for the event. After which, an orientation on the One Billion Rising activity was held.

The event was made possible thru the assistance of the University Student Council of WMSU, University’s Gender Club officers, Women’s Club Coordinators of the different colleges and WMSU Office of the President-Public Affairs Office. (EKEENA O. LIM, WMSU-PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE)

From paella to ensalada, to barbeque to crema de fruta. The Bachelor of Science in Home Economics Education (BSHEED) students got the approval of the guests during the culinary presentation dubbed, “Filipino-South American Fused Cuisine.” The mouth-watering event was held at the Western Mindanao State University-College of Home Economics Function Room last February 19.

The presentation consisted of rich variety of courses such as Ensalada Para Paella for the appetizer, Curry Marinated Chicken Barbeque, Beef Stroganoff, Paella Peruvian Style, Coco Crab Rice, Crema de Fruta for dessert and Chocolate Coffee Rum. The food choices provided an experience of a latin banquet crossed over with the familiar taste of Pinoy cuisine. The fine dining experience gave a taste of the spices that Filipinos are most home with but with the kick of the Latin culture.

The culinary presentation is part of the BSHEED curriculum aside from the on-board training, practice teaching and practicum. The event also served as venue for dialogue with the students’ parents, policies and advisories were discussed in-depth to the parents by BSHEED Department Head, Prof. Ma. Dolores J. Macrohon. She tackled elaborately the importance of the parents’ support to the students in complying with the prerequisites of the course. (EKEENA O. LIM, WMSU-PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE)

Scenes from the stage play of a classic fairytale, Beauty and the Beast performed by WMSU A.B. English students.

The evening was filled with much amazement and appreciation for music and for the theatre arts as the different characters and story of each stage plays braced the audience with their different acts last February 28 at the Western Mindanao State University’s (WMSU) Dr. Juanito Bruno Gymnasium.

A classic favorite and one of the most popular fairytales, the play “Beauty and the Beast” still captured the spectators’ hearts. Performed by the senior WMSU A.B. English students, the cast preserved the plot of the original story and translated it in the context of stage art. With their colorful costumes, animated characters and the moving love interest between the main protagonists of the story sent the audience to delve into the pleasantries of childhood memories.

The second performance was based on a local play featuring the renowned Fort Pilar Shrine. Put up by Mass Communications students, the production of “Ako? Sino? Sila?.” The story revolves around the main character, a vendor in the historical shrine named Rowena as she witness her peers experience life at this day and age. The storyline was instilled with some socio-political issues often thrived by the Filipinos and it emphasized on the characters’ coping up with the challenges brought about by their destitute situation.

The last play is an adaptation of another popular tale titled, “The King and I.” The story plot is based on the novel “Anna and the King of Siam” by Margaret Landon. The story relates the experiences of Anna, a British schoolteacher hired by the King. It depicts about the love conflict between Anna and the King, her adventures with the King’s children and her unrelenting passion for teaching. The brilliant piece begged the audience to listen closely to the exchange of lines of the characters. The much acclaimed legend in literature was daringly presented by another batch of A.B. English students.

With a minimum fee, the audience was able to experience again the familiar story of the Beauty and the Beast with the cast’s highly enthusiastic energy; moved by the societal matters conveyed by Ako? Sino? Sila?; and transported to the majestic land of Siam. The over-all production was headed by Ms. Fhadzralyn Aidil-Karanain. The latter is the adviser of the Theatre Arts class and the production is part of the requirements under the said subject. (EKEENA O. LIM, WMSU-PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE)

Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) officials, together with consumers and officers of various agencies, attended the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Seminar held at Garden Orchid Hotel Convention Center of this city last Thursday.

The seminar was sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE), in coordination with the Philippine Energy Efficiency Project. The event sought to disseminate energy conservation methods and to inform the stakeholders about the favorable effects of these energy-saving measures in the abatement of the energy crisis currently being experienced in the different parts of the country.

Topics of the seminar highlighted conservation tips which address energy consumption especially in the household. Household energy saving concepts and tips were given, it involved tips on everyday activities such as cooking, laundry, ironing, cooling and ventilation. The event also aimed to educate the participants to be more conscious with regards to the efficiency of their electrical devices.

In connection with the practical conservation methods tackled, the Department of Energy discourages the consumers to patronize “energy-saving devices”, which are being sold widely in the market. The said devices afford no actual use to minimize one’s electricity consumption and accordingly it may even pose hazards to the user.

Moreover, the tips given were not only focused on the electrical bill-saving methods but the lecture also covered conservation means of alternative sources of energy such as the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

DOE Mindanao Field Office-Senior Science Research Specialist (SRS), Nenita C. Uy cautioned the participants to vigilantly check their LPG hoses for possible leaks and to change the hose every two years to ensure its efficiency.

DOE Senior SRS for Calibration/Instrumentation and Control, Renante M. Sevilla discussed the importance of energy appliance labeling in the afternoon session of the seminar. Energy standards and energy labeling are recognized strategies to promote the use of energy efficient household electrical products. These strategies contemplate the testing of product samples to verify claims on energy ratings such as energy consumption and energy efficiency.

The last lecture covered the topic of Transport Energy Saving Concepts and Tips including advisories on efficient driving, carpooling and efficient transportation alternatives. The topic which points out practices of fuel wastage was undertaken by Mr. Alexander C. Pueblos.
Attendees to the seminar from WMSU were Vice President for Academic Affairs-Dr. Carmelita M. Felisilda and WMSU Director for Administration-Dr. Joselito D. Madroñal. (EKEENA O. LIM, WMSU-PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE)

Dr. Enriquez-Ho during the occasion took the opportunity to share her learning as a leader, which she believed would be more meaningful if shared. The state university president holds this gem of thoughts close to her which says: When things are meant for you it will come. Do not rush as God has designed plans for all of us. Another thought to ponder goes this way—Accept everyone as a gift for personal and professional growth: the good ones, the difficult ones to deal with and those whose minds we cannot understand.

Her message was all encompassing as she dedicates these wisdoms to every member of the WMSU family. “Practice what you preach. Words become stale when actions are not fully executed,” the latter directed her message towards the members of the administrative and academic staff.

The celebration of Dr. Enriquez-Ho’s first anniversary culminated with a luncheon held at the university’s Executive Building lobby. Friends, relatives and members of the WMSU family gathered in jubilation for the president’s remarkable accomplishments and milestones. (EKEENA O. LIM, WMSU PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE)

Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) graduate of the Western Mindanao State University-Molave, Ginalyn B. Fuentes ranked 5th place during the March 2013 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET)-Elementary Level.

Fuentes, hails from the Molave External Studies Unit (ESU) of the university in Zamboanga del Sur. The latter is a graduate of Batch 2012 and was a thriving working student. She made it through her college life as a student assistant at the Unit Coordinator’s Office of WMSU-Molave.

Dr. Alicia Baldicano, WMSU-External Studies Unit Associate Dean commented on the success of the ESU graduate, “It is because of the support of all the teachers in ESU especially from Molave and of the External Studies Unit staff.”

“Aside from the internal review conducted by the professors, they also requested faculty members [from the main campus] to assist them in the review. It is the teamwork of the internal professors and the External Studies Unit staff, headed by Dr. Ricardo Somblingo,” Dr. Baldicano attributed the performance of the WMSU LET examiners to the joint effort of the ESU, College of Education and the university.
The said licensure examination was given by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) last March 10, 2013 in regional testing centers nationwide and overseas which includes Manila, Cagayan De Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Legazpi, Lucena, Pagadian, Tacloban, Catarman-Samar, Tuguegarao, Zamboanga, and Hong Kong.

WMSU also take pride of the other LET passers coming from the main campus, WMSU-Aurora, WMSU-Pitogo, WMSU-Alicia, WMSU-Diplahan, WMSU-Imelda, WMSU-Ipil, WMSU-Mabuhay, WMSU-Malangas, WMSU-Molave, WMSU-Olutanga, WMSU-Naga, WMSU-Pagadian, WMSU-Siay and WMSU-Tungawan.

The Dean of External Studies Unit-Dr. Ricardo Somblingo of WMSU is overjoyed because aside from producing a topnotcher in a board examination, the ESU also paved the way for a differently-abled student to graduate. Pelayo Serrano, born without limbs finished with an Associate in Computer Science diploma in the university’s External Studies Unit located in Pitogo. He was awarded with a medal for perseverance because he demonstrated perfect attendance in coming to classes.

“I am happy with the performance of the different units and campuses not only because one of he ESUs produced a topnotcher but also the other ESUs performed higher than the national passing rate in the board examination,” Dr. Somblingo shared.

“Keep it up. The ESU office is very much willing to extend any support to the different units and campuses,” Dr. Somblingo expressed.

She was grateful that WMSU extended support with regards to the technical and scientific aspects of coming up with the recipes.

WMSU President, Dr. Milabel Enriquez-Ho expressed her support and willingness to be a partner with DepEd for a cause such as helping to improve the performance of children in school by coming up with nutritious but readily-available and affordable vegetables food menu.

“This will be the beginning of a blooming romance between WMSU and DepEd,” said Dr. Ho. The undertaking is in line with the university’s commitment to serve the community, WMSU President’s 10-Point Agenda and the College of Home Economics’ vision and mission.

The tie-up between the DepEd and WMSU commenced last March and will conclude on August. The test kitchen will explore on 20 different vegetable recipes. A showcase of the recipes is slated on July. (EKEENA O. LIM, WMSU-PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE)

Joseph “Sefi” P. Curada, a 2011 graduate of A.B. English of Western Mindanao State University reaped positive responses for his photography works during the Behance Portfolio Reviews held at SM Lanang, Davao City last May 13 to 20.

Sefi was among the young and budding artists below 25 years old who were shortlisted in the field of illustration, graphics design and photography. Participants to the said portfolio review submitted their works online and were screened by professionals and experienced artists. 10 artists per category all over Mindanao were chosen to present their individual works and be reviewed by critics. Some of the participants hailed from General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Bukidnon, Surigao del Sur. It is worthy to mention that Sefi was the only participant who qualified from Zamboanga City.

Behance Portfolio Reviews brings artists together at events in cities and towns around the world — organized by members, for members. Attendees to the portfolio review got to present and receive feedback on their work, hear from experienced professionals, and meet different fellow creatives.

The Behance Portfolio Reviews event commenced with a short and inspiring presentation prepared by the host. The second part of the event was the portfolio reviews in which attendees break into small groups to have their work reviewed. Mentors and veterans in each field of discipline gave comments and constructive criticisms on the young artists’ works.

Sefi was awarded with the Best Portfolio out of the 10 young photographers in Mindanao. His work focuses on fashion and portrait photography. “I am beyond ecstatic that my presentation was chosen as the best portfolio from the pool of really promising young photographers from Mindanao. This experience has given me the confidence to do better as a photographer,” the 22-year old lad shared.

Also a former lay-out artist of the WMSU’s campus publication-The University Digest, Sefi is currently connected with the university’s Public Affairs Office as a lay-out artist for the University Bulletin. In his spare time he does stints for photoshoots, event coverages and collaborations with different fashion designers and stylists. (EKEENA O. LIM, WMSU-PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE)
