WMSU Reaps Karatedo, Table Tennis Championships in Nat’l SCUAA ‘13

WESTERN MINDANAO STATE UNIVERSITY (WMSU) athletes joined in the recently concluded 2013 National State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) OLYMPICS. The university ranked 8th place over-all among the 17 participating State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the entire country last February 17 to 23 in Dapitan and Dipolog City.

WMSU fielded seventy six (76) athletes to join with Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College (ZCSPC), Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology (ZSCMST), Basilan State College (BaSC) and Jose Rizal Memorial State University (JRMSU) composing the REGION IX delegation.

Region IX gave a record of 11 gold, 3 silver, and 12 bronze medals. Among the sports that WMSU varsity athletes participated included the Men and Women team of Karatedo, which emerged as over-all champion in the individual and team category. Coach Prof. Ricardo Araneta and Mr. Kent Adnillao were very pleased with the performance of their team since this group also won the championship title in the 2013 MASCUF Games held in Bukidnon last November 25 to December 1, 2012.

Also giving pride to WMSU was the Table Tennis Women team coached by Mr. Norman Lloyd Manginsay of College of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (CPERS) of the university. The team gave a straight two record win after having been also proclaimed champion in the 2012 MASCUF Games also held in Bukidnon.

Reaping 4th place in the over-all national rank in the respective events includes the Badminton Men with Coach-Ma. Perfecta Cosadioas, Sepak Takraw with Coach-Reynaldo Macaso and Arnis with John Raymond Jimeno as in- charge of the team.

Other events which WMSU participated include Athletics-Men and Women with Nathaniel Saavedra of CPERS as coach. The team landed as a runner-up. Basketball-Men with Prof. Gaudencio Ponce as the coach and also garnered a runner-up place. Basketball Women with Mr. Perry Jalad as coach and Mr. Randy Viray as his assistant coach and Badminton Women with Ms. Ma. Perfecta Cosadio as coach also ended as runner-up.

Adding in the list as runner- ups include Football with the team coach Mr. Nasal Salih Allian; Tennis with Mr. Luis Balais as coach; Taekwondo with Mr. Eric Alfaro as the team coach; Volleyball Women with Mr. Ralph Llacuna as the coach; and Table Tennis Men with Mr. Norman Manginsay as the coach.
