Preparing for their turn to orient seated in line were the university officials at Molave municipality.

“We bring WMSU to you… to ensure that you enjoy equitable access to quality and affordable education…” Prof. Milagros Yosores, Dean of Student Affairs pointed this out to ESUs together with Dean Ricardo Somblingo and the rest of the University officials tasked to conduct a series of orientation which started last July 2-5,2013 in Pagadian City, Molave and Aurora municipalities.

WMSU’s move to fortify links with its External Studies Units is heightened by virtue of the government’s educational mandate to make education accessible to people from all walks of life. Regular visits have intensified under the leadership of Dr. Milabel Enriquez Ho. With recent move of HEIs towards amalgamation and the anticipated “regionalization” of tertiary schools stronger linkages with provincial units are encouraged for better sharing of resources among others.

Fifteen External Studies Units are presently recognized as part of WMSU. In Zamboanga del Sur the following city and municipalities have external studies units, Pagadian City, Aurora, Molave and Pitogo. Zamboanga City has one in Curuan Barangay; Zamboanga Sibugay province has ten ESUs situated in the following municipalities: Tungawan, Ipil, Siay, Imelda, Alicia, Mabuhay, Olutanga, Malangas, Diplahan and Sta. Clara Naga.

WMSUs collaborative efforts with local government units and DepEd high schools have been fruitful. While the University maintains an eminent reputation in education for economic and political reasons its paramount objective is to serve the underprivileged.

WMSU started out by offering graduate program in Masters of Education Administration in some municipalities in Zamboanga del Sur namely Labason, Imelda, and Margos sa Tubig with a handful of students in the mid 90s through the guidance of Dr. Erdulfo Fernando who was WMSU president then. Former University President Dr. Eldigario D. Gonzales in 2000 gave a boost to the establishment of more ESUs under the office of the Vice President for External Studies held by Dr. Julieta Y. Tabacug and the first Dean of ESUs Dr. Ma. Gregorio Galvez in 1990.
