Delmalyn S. Hajan, an AB Asian Studies student from the College of Asian and Islamic Studies (CAIS), was among the selected youth from the Philippines who took part in the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) program held in Japan from October 2-9, 2018.

The JENESYS program is a people-to-people exchange program between Japan and the Asia-Pacific region that aims to build a mutual trust and understanding among its peoples, and to build a basis for future friendship and cooperation. It also intends to encourage an understanding of Japan’s economy, society, history, diverse culture, politics and diplomatic relations.

The eight-day program became an opportunity for the delegates to learn about the rich traditions of Japanese culture courtesy of a workshop conducted by cultural exchange lecturer Mr. Honoka Kinoshita of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. The Philippine delegation also visited the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) to observe the legacy of Japan’s cutting-edge technology.

The participants also had a courtesy call with Nagareyama City Mayor Yoshiharu Izaki where they were also given lectures on Japan’s family policy, economic market and marketing strategies.

The program enabled the delegates to visit educational sites and institutions, high-tech and traditional industries, world heritage sites, and provincial government offices. They also participated in cross-cultural events, workshops including discussions with local people

More than just an educational tour, JENESYS2018 allowed its delegates to experience true Japanese culture in all its aspects by letting the participants stay with a Japanese foster family and experience hands-on the admirable societal manners and traits of the Japanese people.

The JENESYS program was organized by Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE), with the support of the ASEAN Secretariat, and in collaboration with the National Youth Commission (NYC).
