Every child has the right to go to school but millions are still being left behind. This setback instigated the National Association of United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) Clubs in the Philippines to foster new partnerships with the education sector and youth leaders to come up with innovative solutions in solving the education gaps in the Millennium Development Goals.
The Regional Innovation Conference on Education is NAUCP’s response to the MDG of achieving universal primary education and UNESCO and World Bank’s Education for All (EFA) vision. EFA is an international initiative to bring the benefits of education to “every citizen in every society”.
In partnership with the Western Mindanao State University Peace Mediators Club under the Center for Peace and Development and Go Ahon Pilipinas, NAUCP conducted the first RICE in the region at the Celebrity Hall of Grand Astoria Hotel on June 22.
Executive Assistant Nathaniel Asuncion of the Office of the City Mayor welcomed the participants from Basilan State College, Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology, SILSILAH, DepEd representatives from Ayala, Curuan, Tetuan, Sta. Maria, Putik, Labuan, Baliwasan, Manicahan, Mercedes, and faculty members and peace mediators of WMSU who were introduced by the lead convenor of RICE Western Mindanao and the Director of the Center for Peace and Development-Dr. Marcelina G. Carpizo. WMSU Vice President for Administration and Finance-Dr. Ederlinda M. Fernandez delivered a solidary message to the participants.

According to Prof. Serafin A. Arviola Jr., chairman of the NAUCP, education is a major catalyst for human development. The other millennium development goals can be achieved through education. It can help lift people out of poverty and equal schooling for both boys and girls is the foundation for development.
Regional Directors Dr. Emmylou B. Yanga (CHED), Dr. Lorenzo G. Macapili (OIC-TESDA), Dr. Corazon P. Brown, CESO IV (DepEd) and Dr. Sisinio B. Cano (OIC-DOLE) assessed the regional MDG and EFA goals towards 2015 during the first plenary session whereas NAUCP board member Prof. Jonathan Jaime Guerero expounded the role of UNESCO Clubs in the Post-2015 EFA and Education MDG. Ms. Meryl Grace Agudelo, executive director of “I Can Make a Difference” related the importance of volunteerism in revitalizing educational innovations.
The conference concluded with the presentation of the workshop outputs of the participants that featured their plans on a better world campaign through employing their skills in imparting knowledge and values to their students so that by 2015, Western Mindanao may possibly achieve the MDGs and EFA goals.
