The newly-elected officials of the WMSU Faculty Union, headed by the new President Engr. Alvin Miguel, took their oath before Atty. Eduardo F. Sanson, Dean College of Law, during the oath taking ceremony held at the College of Law Moot Court last July 27, 2016.
Engr. Alvin Miguel, a professor of the College of Engineering and Technology (CET) Electrical Engineering Department, triumphed over five other candidates as he was elected as the new Faculty Union President in an election held last July 15, 2016 at the Juanito Bruno Gymnasium.
Other elected officers of the union are: Vice President Prof. Al-ghani Mohammad (College of Liberal Arts); Secretary Prof. Manilyn Miñoza (ILS-Elementary); Treasurer Prof. Susan Montebon (College of Science and Mathematics); PIO Prof. Carl Richard Dagalea (ILS- High School); Auditor Dr. Mohammad Nur Paspasan (College of Science and Mathematics); and Project Manager Prof. Ardel Barre (College of Forestry and Environmental Studies).
Following the completion of Prof. Edgar Araojo, outgoing president’s two-year term, the union sees new light in the person of its freshly elected leaders to pursue the endeavors of the preceding administration and introduce new projects and programs beneficial to the faculty members of this university.
Engr. Miguel said he is ecstatic to start his work as Faculty Regent. “I’m very happy that the members of the faculty have given their trust and confidence and elected me as their president,” said he. “I feel honored and proud to be the first faculty regent from the College of Engineering and Technology,” he added.
When asked about his plans for the union, Engr. Miguel said he will continue to engage in income-generating projects to ensure the stability of the Union’s treasury and to be able to give more assistance to the faculty. “We will continue to manage the canteen and we’ll look into the possibility of putting up a water refilling station in the university,” Engr. Miguel said. “We will also let the union engage in agri-business like poultry. We can utilize a portion of the vast La Paz Experimental Forest,” the new regent further added.
“We’ll also look into a program where we can improve the quality of instruction of the teachers like technology-based teaching method as well as trainings. I will endorse it to the administration that each department should be provided with overhead projectors and whiteboards,” added Engr. Miguel.
“Another project that we would like to implement is to grant loans to faculty members attending trainings and seminars for their personal and professional growth. They can pay it in installment such that it will not be a burden to them,” Engr. Miguel said.
The new regent is hopeful that, in his term, they can attend to the faculty’s social needs through a housing project where the faculty can be accommodated. “I would like to revive the plan of putting up a WMSU community through Pag-ibig,” he mentioned. “I feel that it is part of our corporate responsibility to make sure that they have their own house before or when they retire,” the engineer further said.
Section 3 of R.A. 8292 declared that the president of the Faculty Club of a State University or College shall be a member of its Board of Regents/Trustees. The union is celebrating its 15th year and it has grown through its dynamic leadership and a sense of camaraderie among its members. The new faculty leaders will serve for a period of two years commencing school year 2016-2017 until school year 2017-2018. The new faculty regent also served three times as president of the CET Faculty Club and was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Union Club from school years 2012-2015. (Liezel M.
