Prof. Julie Uy-Cabato, Director of Western Mindanao State University’s (WMSU) Language Development Resource Center (LDRC) formally announced on Sunday, April 5, the renaming of its prime program, the Job Enabling English Proficiency (JEEP) that has been existing for years now.
Now named EPIC or English Proficiency for International Competitiveness, the program was renamed because its thrust and direction has become more comprehensive.
“It’s not really about grammar and structure. It is all about the soft skills of self-marketing, presentation, and communication,” said Prof. Cabato.
The launching of EPIC and other programs under the LDRC was held on Sunday, April 5 at the Juanito Bruno Gymnasium, WMSU. The 5th JEEP Culminating Program was also conducted on the same day where the director, Prof. Cabato, faculty, and technical staff of the LDRC recognized the 2015 JEEP finishers for accomplishing four semesters of the said program.
27 students out of 860 finishers were recognized as outstanding. Michelle D. Yalon of the Bachelor in Secondary Education program was the top finisher.
The culminating program of JEEP was graced by the university officials—Dr. Milabel Enriquez-Ho, President; the Vice Presidents, Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena (VPAA), Dr. Ederlinda M. Fernandez (VPPAF) and Dr. Roberto B. Torres (VP RESEL); the University Registrar, Mrs. Pilar Encarnado, other directors, and deans of the colleges that the JEEP program caters to.
Meanwhile, Atty. Emmanuel C. De Guia , Technical Consultant of the Senate Committee on Education, Arts and Culture was the guest speaker for the affair. He inspired the students and guests by relating his experiences as a student and how the proficiency of the English language helped catapult him to his current position. Atty. De Guia is the current representative of Sen. Pia S. Cayetano to the WMSU Board of Regents.
LDRC Director Cabato further announced that the center will soon be offering Spanish language classes in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes.
“All these programs will be in consonance with the advocacies of the university,” Prof. Cabato added.
