WMSU Peace Mediators Club is UNESCO Outstanding Youth Group

The WMSU Peace Mediators Club (WPMC), under the Center for Peace and Development, Office of the President was chosen one of the Outstanding UNESCO Clubs in the field of Human and Social Sciences out of the eighty-five UNESCO-accredited youth organizations in the Philippines. The award, plaque and certificate of merit were received by Mr. Ryan Cabangcala and Mr. Manuel Siason, the club adviser and the president, respectively, during the National Innovation Conference on Education (NICE 2013) that also marked the 2nd Annual Convention of National Association of UNESCO Clubs in the Philippines (NAUCP), Inc. held on January 26-29, 2012 in Pansol, Calamba, Laguna with the theme, “Water Education: Developing Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Future”.

WPMC conducts a kapihan dubbed, Ka-Peace ‘Ta, every year during the celebration of the Mindanao Week of Peace. The first kapihan which was held on November 29, 2011 bannered the theme, “Mindano Peace Process: MILF demands, Government Stance and Other Issues”. Atty. Eduardo Sanson, Dean of the WMSU College of Law was invited as resource person. In 2012, the theme of the kapihan was “The Spirit of Peace Among the Youth Through Volunteerism” with Assistant Secretary Sitti Jehanne U. Mutin of the Office of the Presidential Assistant on the Peace Process, as resource person. The kapihan is open to students of various schools and colleges in the city.

The club initiates other peace-related and community service activities such outreach programs, blood letting activities, conduct of peace seminars and a lot more. (Ms. Evelyn C. Luceño, WMSU-OP)
